diabetes_week.jpgDid you know that 3.5 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes across the UK – and there are a further 549,000 people who have the condition and don’t know about it?

Just about everyone has heard of diabetes, but how many of us actually understand what the condition entails and how it affects an individual? The theme of this year’s ‘Diabetes Week’ is Setting the Record Straight and ensuring that not only do people know about the condition – but to know exactly what it means.

Let’s go from the top...

Diabetes is a lifelong condition where a person’s body can no longer maintain blood sugar levels and, without treatment, they become too high. There are two main types of diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2. Type 2 diabetes is far more common amongst people around the UK.

The new guidance speaks of ‘skills, knowledge, experience and training’ (SKET) and encourages those appointing individuals or companies to ensure that anyone coming to work on site has the right qualities, to ensure that they perform their task safely.
