What’s that in the sky?

Is it a bird?

Is it a plane?

It’s an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle being flown by a qualified pilot!

You may have noticed that UAVs, or drones, have been snatching headlines all over the world in the last few years – and it’s not surprising! New drone technology is poised to radically transform job roles in dozens of industries, from retail, security, agriculture, surveying and more.

 Even the big boys are jumping on board. Delivery giants Amazon and UPS are planning to use drones for the majority of their small package deliveries. Internet behemoth Facebook also plans to provide WiFi access to world dark zones using their drone-focused Aquila project.

The use of drones in commercial enterprises could potentially unlock massive amounts of wealth in sectors throughout the UK. After all, using drones for many tasks increases efficiency and productivity, decreases workload and production costs, improves accuracy and refines customer relations.

The future belongs to organisations that can jump on these great opportunities, now.

This is why TQUK is proud to have partnered with COPTRZ, the UK’s leading drone solution provider, to develop the TQUK Level 4 Award for Commercial Drone Pilots (RQF).

COPTRZ enables businesses and government organisations to get the most from drone technology. To date, 1,000 businesses access the benefits of drone technology, providing cheaper, faster and safer operational capability.

This qualification is designed specifically to align to the COPTRZ COP-SU programme of training and assessment. This programme is approved by the Civil Aviation Authority as a recognised programme which enables successful learners to be recommended by COPTRZ for permission for commercial operations.

This qualification will underpin drone operation competencies required in the following job roles:

  • Commercial drone pilot
  • Inspector
  • Photographer
  • Scaffolder
  • Surveyor
  • Engineer
  • Roofer

Successful learners will be able to progress on to even more advanced drone operations qualifications, including the TQUK Level 5 Certificate for Commercial Drone Chief Pilots and the TQUK Level 6 Certificate for Commercial Drone Operations Managers (both to be released soon).

Centres delivering the TQUK Level 4 Award for Commercial Drone Use (RQF) will impart a level of pilot competency before the learner is eligible to act as a Pilot-in-Command (PIC) in charge of a Small Unmanned Aircraft for Visual Flight Rules (VFR)/Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) commercial operations. Critical elements include:

  • Adequate theoretical knowledge/general airmanship;
  • Successful completion of a practical flight assessment on the Class of SUA that is applied for;
  • A minimum amount of recent flying experience on the class of SUA that is being applied for.

Drones will have a central place in the UK economy and it’s important that learners have the skills they need to meet future demand. TQUK wants to help make that future a reality!
