Town Planning Assistants lead sustainable community development and planning processes in the planning, construction, and government sectors. They interact with the public, clients, and officials, advising and managing planning applications. When not in the office, they collaborate on-site with professionals from diverse fields like architecture, surveying, and ecology. Adherence to professional and ethical standards is not just a requirement but a responsibility as they conduct research, analyse policies, and prepare reports.

End-Point Assessment Components

To complete their End-Point Assessment, Town Planning Assistant apprentices must achieve a pass or distinction in their knowledge test, professional discussion (underpinned by a portfolio) and project.

  • This component is based on 20 multiple-choice questions.

Apprentices have 60 minutes to complete the test, and it is a closed-book test.

  • The professional discussion is a two-way discussion involving both the End-Point Assessor and the Apprentice. It lasts 60 minutes, and the Assessor asks at least eight questions, two for each grading theme and all about certain aspects of the occupation. The apprentice may have access to their portfolio during the assessment.

The professional discussion must take place in a quiet room, free from distractions and influence.

  • The project is conducted as a report, which must be submitted to the EPAO eight weeks after approval of the project title and scope.

With a word count of 4,000, the apprentice must base the project on any of the following:

    • Developing or assessing a specific site.

    • A planning policy area.

    • A planning issue.
